Saranno 9 i team stranieri: 6 dalla Gran Bretagna e 3 provenienti rispettivamente da USA, Messico e Nuova Zelanda. 2 di questi 'ospiti', l'inglese Cityindex Leopard di Mike Slade e il neozelandese Maximus di Bill Buckley, sono avversari temibili per gli australiani Wild Oats XI (Bob Oatley) e Skandia (Grant Wharington) - i maxi di 30 metri di lunghezza overall a chiglia basculante, favoriti per la vittoria in tempo reale in questa storica regata.
